Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn al-Hajjaj al-Sawwaf al-Basri narrated to us: Muadh ibn Hisham al-Dastawa’i narrated to us: My father narrated to me, from Budayl ibn Maysarah al-Uqayli, from Shahr ibn Hawshab, from Asma bint Yazid ibn al-Sakan al-Ansariyyah, who said: The sleeve of the Messenger of Allah’s (Allah bless him and grant him peace) garment reached his wrist.
Abu Isa said: This hadith is hasan gharib.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The English witness gives Asma bint Yazid ibn al-Sakan al-Ansariyyah and the report, but omits the preceding chain (Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn al-Hajjaj, Muadh ibn Hisham, his father, Budayl ibn Maysarah, and Shahr ibn Hawshab). The Arabic says the sleeve reached the wrist.
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحَجَّاجِ الصَّوَّافُ الْبَصْرِيُّ،
The English witness omits five transmitters preceding Asma in the Arabic chain.
Can the English witness’s abbreviated isnad be confirmed as an intentional editorial choice?
