Qutaybah narrated to us, from Malik. And al-Ansari narrated to us: Ma‘n narrated to us: Malik narrated to us, from Abu al-Zinad, from al-A‘raj, from Abu Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: ‘None of you should walk in one sandal: put on both sandals, or take both off.’
Abu Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih. There is also a report on this subject from Jabir.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The Arabic gives two routes that converge at Malik: one through Qutaybah, and one through al-Ansari and Ma‘n. The English witness begins at Abu Hurayrah and omits both routes and the transmitters before him.
The Arabic states the two alternatives symmetrically: wear both sandals or take both off. ‘Go barefoot’ in the English witness conveys the second alternative.
حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ،
The English witness omits the two Arabic transmission routes and their named transmitters before Abu Hurayrah.
Can the English witness’s abbreviated isnad be confirmed as an intentional editorial choice?
