Translation

Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Azhar ibn Marwan al-Basri narrated to us: al-Harith ibn Nabhan narrated to us, from Ma‘mar, from Ammar ibn Abi Ammar, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) forbade a man from putting on his sandals while standing.

Abu Isa said: This hadith is gharib. Ubaydullah ibn Amr al-Raqqi narrated this hadith from Ma‘mar, from Qatadah, from Anas. Neither of the two hadiths is sound according to the hadith scholars. Al-Harith ibn Nabhan is not regarded by them as a precise memorizer, and we know no basis for the report of Qatadah from Anas.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The English witness begins at Abu Hurayrah and omits the preceding chain (Azhar ibn Marwan, al-Harith ibn Nabhan, Ma‘mar, and Ammar ibn Abi Ammar). The Arabic grades this hadith gharib; the English witness adds hasan.

  • The final comment says al-Harith is not considered a hafiz by hadith scholars and that the compilers know no basis for Qatadah’s report from Anas.

  • حَدَّثَنَا أَزْهَرُ بْنُ مَرْوَانَ الْبَصْرِيُّ،

The English witness omits four transmitters preceding Abu Hurayrah in the Arabic chain.

Can the English witness’s abbreviated isnad be confirmed as an intentional editorial choice?

  • ‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ غَرِيبٌ ‏.

The Arabic grades the hadith gharib only and does not include hasan.

Was hasan added to the English grading from another source or in error?
