Yahya ibn Musa narrated to us: Sa‘id ibn Muhammad al-Warraq and Abu Yahya al-Himmani both narrated to us: Salih ibn Hassan narrated to us, from ‘Urwah, from ‘A’ishah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: ‘If you wish to join me, let the provisions of a traveler suffice you in this world. Beware of keeping company with the wealthy, and do not deem a garment worn out until you have patched it.’

Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is gharīb (rare); we know it only through the report of Salih ibn Hassan. He said: I heard Muhammad say, ‘Salih ibn Hassan is munkar al-hadith (one whose reports are rejected). Salih ibn Abi Hassan, from whom Ibn Abi Dhi’b narrated, is trustworthy.’

Abu ‘Isa said: The meaning of his words, ‘Beware of keeping company with the wealthy,’ is like what was reported from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said: ‘Whoever sees someone favored over him in appearance and provision, let him look at someone lower than himself among those over whom he has been favored; that is more likely to keep him from disdaining Allah’s blessing upon him.’

It is also reported from ‘Awn ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Utbah that he said: ‘I kept company with the wealthy and saw no one more troubled than myself: I would see a mount better than my mount and a garment better than my garment. Then I kept company with the poor, and I found relief.’

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The Arabic addresses a woman in the first-person report; the instructions are spoken by the Prophet to ‘A’ishah.

  • حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ مُوسَى،

The English witness omits the full chain, including the two transmitters who jointly report from Salih ibn Hassan.

Should the English witness be expanded to preserve both transmitters and the full chain?
