حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الأَحْوَصِ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ مُسْلِمِ بْنِ نَذِيرٍ، عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ، قَالَ أَخَذَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم بِعَضَلَةِ سَاقِي أَوْ سَاقِهِ فَقَالَ " هَذَا مَوْضِعُ الإِزَارِ فَإِنْ أَبَيْتَ فَأَسْفَلُ فَإِنْ أَبَيْتَ فَلاَ حَقَّ لِلإِزَارِ فِي الْكَعْبَيْنِ " . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ . رَوَاهُ الثَّوْرِيُّ وَشُعْبَةُ عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ .

Qutaybah narrated to us: Abu al-Ahwas narrated to us, from Abu Ishaq, from Muslim ibn Nadhir, from Hudhayfah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of my calf—or his own calf—and said: ‘This is where the izar (lower garment) should sit. If you insist, then lower it; but if you insist further, the izar has no right to cover the ankles.’ Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih (good and authentic). Al-Thawri and Shu‘bah reported it from Abu Ishaq.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The Arabic preserves uncertainty between Hudhayfah’s calf (‘my calf’) and the Prophet’s own calf (‘his calf’). The successive conditional phrases are retained.
قَالَ أَخَذَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم بِعَضَلَةِ سَاقِي أَوْ سَاقِهِ فَقَالَ " هَذَا مَوْضِعُ الإِزَارِ فَإِنْ أَبَيْتَ فَأَسْفَلُ فَإِنْ أَبَيْتَ فَلاَ حَقَّ لِلإِزَارِ فِي الْكَعْبَيْنِ " .
The Arabic gives two successive ‘if you refuse/insist’ conditions: first lower the garment further, then, if refusing again, it must not cover the ankles. The English witness compresses these steps.
