حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ رَبِيعَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ الْعَسْقَلاَنِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ رُكَانَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، أَنَّ رُكَانَةَ، صَارَعَ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَصَرَعَهُ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ رُكَانَةُ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ " إِنَّ فَرْقَ مَا بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ الْعَمَائِمُ عَلَى الْقَلاَنِسِ " . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ غَرِيبٌ وَإِسْنَادُهُ لَيْسَ بِالْقَائِمِ . وَلاَ نَعْرِفُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ الْعَسْقَلاَنِيَّ وَلاَ ابْنَ رُكَانَةَ .

Qutaybah narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Rabi‘ah narrated to us, from Abu al-Hasan al-‘Asqalani, from Abu Ja‘far ibn Muhammad ibn Rukanah, from his father, that Rukanah wrestled the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet overpowered him. Rukanah said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: ‘The distinction between us and the polytheists is turbans worn over caps.’ Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is gharīb (rare), and its chain is not soundly established. We do not know Abu al-Hasan al-‘Asqalani, nor Ibn Rukanah.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The witness calls the report hasan gharib, but the Arabic here says gharib and explicitly says its chain is not firmly established.
قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ غَرِيبٌ وَإِسْنَادُهُ لَيْسَ بِالْقَائِمِ .
The witness adds hasan; the Arabic gives only gharīb, followed by a statement that its isnad is not firm.
