Ibn Abi ‘Umar narrated to us: Sufyan narrated to us, from ‘Asim ibn Kulayb, from Ibn Abi Musa, who said: I heard ‘Ali say: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade me from wearing al-qassi (a type of patterned silk) and the red mitharah (saddle cushion), and from wearing my ring on either of these two fingers. He pointed to the index finger and the middle finger. Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih (good and authentic). Ibn Abi Musa is Abu Burdah ibn Abi Musa, whose name was ‘Amir ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Qays.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The Arabic names al-qassi and al-mitharah; the English terms in parentheses are brief identifications of these garments.

  • حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ،

The English witness omits the chain from Ibn Abi ‘Umar through ‘Asim ibn Kulayb.

Should the English witness include the full chain?

The Arabic says ‘my ring’ and identifies two fingers; the witness pluralizes rings and leaves the object unspecified.

Should the witness specify the ring and clarify that the fingers are the index and middle fingers?
