Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.
Ali ibn Hujr narrated to us: al-Rabi ibn Badr and Muhammad ibn Yazid al-Wasiti narrated to us, from Abu al-Ashhab, with a similar report.
Abu Isa said: This hadith is hasan gharib; we know it only through the report of Abd al-Rahman ibn Tarafah. Salm ibn Zarir narrated from Abd al-Rahman ibn Tarafah a report similar to that of Abu al-Ashhab. More than one person of knowledge is reported to have bound their teeth with gold, and this hadith is evidence for them. Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi said: ‘Salm ibn Razin’—this is a mistake; ‘Zarir’ is correct. Abu Sa‘d al-Saghani’s name is Muhammad ibn Muyassir.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The English witness summarizes this entry as ‘Another chain with similar meaning’ and omits the transmitters Ali ibn Hujr, al-Rabi ibn Badr, and Muhammad ibn Yazid al-Wasiti. The Arabic says Salm ibn Zarir narrated from Abd al-Rahman ibn Tarafah a report similar to Abu al-Ashhab’s.
The Arabic records two name forms for Salm: Zarir in the report’s route and Razin in the form that Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi calls a mistake. It says Zarir is correct.
حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ،
The English witness summarizes the route and omits the three transmitters named in the Arabic.
Was this alternate chain intentionally omitted from the English witness?
The English witness spells the narrator’s name Taraqah, while the Arabic in both places gives Tarafah.
Is Taraqah a transcription error in the English witness?
