Ishaq ibn Mansur narrated to us: Harun ibn Isma'il al-Khazzaz informed us: Ali ibn al-Mubarak informed us: Yahya ibn Abi Kathir informed us: Abu Salamah and Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Thawban narrated that Salman ibn Sakhr al-Ansari, one of the Banu Bayadah, declared his wife to be like his mother's back until Ramadan had passed. When half of Ramadan had passed, he had intercourse with her at night. He went to the Messenger of Allah and told him. The Messenger of Allah said: Free a slave. He said: I cannot find one. He said: Fast for two consecutive months. He said: I cannot. He said: Feed sixty poor people. He said: I cannot find the means. The Messenger of Allah then said to Farwah ibn Amr: Give him that basket. It was a large container holding fifteen or sixteen sa's. He said: Feed sixty poor people with it. Abu Isa said: This hadith is hasan. He is called Salman ibn Sakhr and is also called Salamah ibn Sakhr al-Bayadi. Scholars act on this hadith concerning the expiation for zihar.

Zihar is a pre-Islamic formula likening one's wife to a permanently unmarriageable female relative; it requires expiation before marital relations resume. A sa is a measure of capacity.
