حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي عَرُوبَةَ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم نَهَى أَنْ يَشْرَبَ الرَّجُلُ قَائِمًا . فَقِيلَ الأَكْلُ قَالَ ذَاكَ أَشَدُّ . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ .

Muhammad ibn Bashshar narrated to us: Ibn Abi ‘Adi narrated to us, from Sa‘id ibn Abi ‘Arubah, from Qatadah, from Anas, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade a man to drink while standing. Someone asked, “And eating?” He replied, “That is worse.”
Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The English witness begins with Qatadah and omits the first three transmitters. The Arabic leaves the speaker of the question ‘And eating?’ impersonal; this is preserved as ‘Someone asked.’
