Abu Hurairah reported that the Messenger of Allah said: ‘An adulterer is not a believer while committing adultery, and a thief is not a believer while stealing; but repentance remains available.’ Abu ‘Isa said: ‘The hadith of Abu Hurairah is hasan sahih gharīb through this route.’ Reports on this topic are also related from Ibn ‘Abbas, ‘A’ishah, and ‘Abdullah ibn Abi Awfa.
It is also reported from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet said: ‘When a servant commits adultery, faith departs from him and hangs above his head like a canopy. When he stops that deed, faith returns to him.’ Abu Ja‘far Muhammad ibn ‘Ali said about this: ‘He leaves faith for Islam.’ Through more than one route, the Prophet also said regarding adultery and theft: ‘Whoever commits any of that and the prescribed punishment is carried out on him, it is expiation for his sin. Whoever commits any of that and Allah conceals it, then his case is with Allah: if He wills, He will punish him on the Day of Resurrection, and if He wills, He will forgive him.’ This was narrated from the Prophet by ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib, ‘Ubadah ibn al-Samit, and Khuzaymah ibn Thabit.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The source distinguishes the initial wording, a separate canopy image for faith departing during adultery, Muhammad ibn ‘Ali’s interpretation (‘from faith to Islam’), and the reports about legal punishment or concealment. ‘Repentance remains available’ translates التوبة معروضة without adding the witness’s explanatory parenthetical.
