Al-Sunabihi reported from ‘Ubadah ibn al-Samit: ‘I visited him while he was dying and wept. He said, “Take it easy; why are you crying? By Allah, if I am asked to testify, I will testify for you; if I am asked to intercede, I will intercede for you; and if I am able, I will benefit you.” Then he said, “By Allah, there is no hadith I heard from the Messenger of Allah that is good for you without my having told it to you—except one hadith, which I will tell you today, now that death has closed in around me. I heard the Messenger of Allah say: ‘Whoever testifies that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, Allah has forbidden the Fire to him.’”’ Reports on this topic are also related from Abu Bakr, ‘Umar, ‘Uthman, ‘Ali, Talhah, Jabir, Ibn ‘Umar, and Zayd ibn Khalid.
Ibn Abi ‘Umar said: ‘I heard Ibn ‘Uyaynah say that Muhammad ibn ‘Ajlan was trustworthy and reliable in hadith.’ Abu ‘Isa said: ‘This hadith is hasan sahih gharīb through this route.’ Al-Sunabihi was ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Usaylah, Abu ‘Abdullah.
Al-Zuhri was asked about the Prophet’s statement, ‘Whoever says, “There is no god but Allah,” will enter Paradise.’ He replied: ‘This was only at the beginning of Islam, before the obligations, commands, and prohibitions were revealed.’ Abu ‘Isa explained that, according to some scholars, people of monotheism will enter Paradise even if they are punished in the Fire for their sins; they will not remain in the Fire forever. It is reported from ‘Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud, Abu Dharr, ‘Imran ibn Husayn, Jabir ibn ‘Abdullah, Ibn ‘Abbas, Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri, and Anas ibn Malik that the Prophet said: ‘A group of people of monotheism will come out of the Fire and enter Paradise.’ This was also reported from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, Ibrahim al-Nakha‘i, and more than one of the Successors. Through more than one route, Abu Hurairah also reported the Prophet’s explanation of the verse, ‘Perhaps those who disbelieved will wish they had been Muslims’: ‘When the people of monotheism are brought out of the Fire and admitted to Paradise, those who disbelieved will wish they had been Muslims.’
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
This source unit combines ‘Ubadah’s deathbed report, transmitter comments, and an extensive explanation of how the statement about the Fire is understood. ‘If I am asked to testify’ translates استشهدت and is distinct from being martyred. The commentary explicitly says monotheists may be punished for sins but will not remain in the Fire forever; this qualification is preserved.
