Ahmad ibn Abdah al-Dabbi al-Basri narrated to us: Yazid ibn Zuray' narrated to us: Ayyub narrated to us: Amr ibn Dinar narrated to us, from Jabir ibn Zayd, from Ibn Abbas, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah say, ‘If a person in ihram has no waist wrapper, let him wear trousers; if he has no sandals, let him wear leather socks.’ Qutaybah narrated to us: Hammad ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Amr, with a similar report.

There are reports on this topic from Ibn Umar and Jabir. Abu Isa said: This is a hasan sahih hadith. Some scholars act on it and say that if a person in ihram has no waist wrapper, he may wear trousers, and if he has no sandals, he may wear leather socks. This is Ahmad's view. Others cite Ibn Umar's report from the Prophet: ‘If he has no sandals, let him wear leather socks cut below the ankles.’ This is the view of Sufyan al-Thawri, al-Shafi'i, and Malik.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The commentary preserves two views on whether leather socks must be cut below the ankles when sandals are unavailable.
