Qutaybah narrated to us: Ya'qub ibn Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, from Amr ibn Abi Amr, from al-Muttalib, from Jabir ibn Abd Allah, from the Prophet, who said: ‘Land game is lawful for you while you are in ihram, provided you did not hunt it yourselves or have it hunted for you.’
There are reports on this topic from Abu Qatadah and Talhah. Abu Isa said: The hadith of Jabir is explicit. We do not know that al-Muttalib heard it from Jabir. Some scholars act on this and see no harm in a person in ihram eating game, provided he did not hunt it and it was not hunted for him. Abu Isa said: This is the best and clearest hadith narrated on this topic. Ahmad and Ishaq held this view.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The ruling turns on who hunted the animal and whether it was hunted specifically for the person in ihram.
