Qutaybah narrated to us, from Malik ibn Anas, from Abu al-Nadr, from Nafi', the freedman of Abu Qatadah, from Abu Qatadah, who said: I was with the Prophet until, on a road to Mecca, I stayed behind with some companions who were in ihram, while I was not in ihram. I saw a wild donkey and mounted my horse. I asked my companions to hand me my whip, but they refused. I asked them for my spear, but they refused. I took it myself, charged the donkey, and killed it. Some of the Prophet's Companions ate from it, while others abstained. They caught up with the Prophet and asked him about it. He said, ‘It is food Allah has provided for you.’
