Ahmad ibn Mani' narrated to us: Isma'il ibn Ibrahim informed us: Ibn Jurayj informed us, from Abd Allah ibn Ubayd ibn Umayr, from Ibn Abi Ammar, who said: I asked Jabir ibn Abd Allah, ‘Is the hyena considered game?’ He replied, ‘Yes.’ I asked, ‘May I eat it?’ He replied, ‘Yes.’ I asked, ‘Did the Messenger of Allah say this?’ He replied, ‘Yes.’
Abu Isa said: This is a hasan sahih hadith. Ali ibn al-Madini reported that Yahya said Jarir ibn Hazim narrated this hadith as coming from Jabir, from Umar. The version of Ibn Jurayj is more accurate. This is the view of Ahmad and Ishaq. Some scholars act on this hadith and hold that a person in ihram who kills a hyena must pay compensation.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The report treats the hyena as game that may be eaten, and the commentary notes a compensatory penalty if killed by someone in ihram.
