Hannad narrated to us: Abu Mu'awiyah narrated to us, from al-A'mash, from Ibrahim, from Abis ibn Rabi'ah, who said: I saw Umar ibn al-Khattab kiss the Stone and say, ‘I am kissing you, and I know that you are only a stone. Were it not that I saw the Messenger of Allah kiss you, I would not kiss you.’

There are reports on this topic from Abu Bakr and Ibn Umar. Abu Isa said: The hadith of Umar is hasan sahih.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • Umar's statement distinguishes reverence for the prophetic practice from worship of the Stone.
