Qutaybah narrated to us: Sufyan ibn Uyaynah narrated to us, from Amr ibn Dinar, from Tawus, from Ibn Abbas, who said: The Messenger of Allah moved briskly during tawaf around the House and between Safa and Marwah only to show the polytheists his strength.

There are reports on this topic from A'ishah, Ibn Umar, and Jabir. Abu Isa said: The hadith of Ibn Abbas is hasan sahih. Scholars recommend brisk walking between Safa and Marwah. If someone does not move briskly and instead walks, they consider that permissible.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The report links brisk walking to demonstrating strength; the commentary still treats walking as valid.
