Qutaybah narrated to us: Hammad ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Amr ibn Dinar, from Ibn Umar, from Bilal, that the Prophet prayed inside the Ka'bah. Ibn Abbas said, ‘He did not pray; rather, he said the takbir.’

There are reports on this topic from Usamah ibn Zayd, al-Fadl ibn Abbas, Uthman ibn Talhah, and Shaybah ibn Uthman. Abu Isa said: The hadith of Bilal is hasan sahih. Most scholars act on it and see no harm in praying inside the Ka'bah. Malik ibn Anas said there is no harm in offering voluntary prayers inside it, but he disliked performing obligatory prayers there. Al-Shafi'i said there is no harm in performing either obligatory or voluntary prayers inside the Ka'bah, since the rules of purification and direction of prayer are the same for both.
