حَدَّثَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ غَيْلاَنَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنِ الأَسْوَدِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، أَنَّ ابْنَ الزُّبَيْرِ، قَالَ لَهُ حَدِّثْنِي بِمَا، كَانَتْ تُفْضِي إِلَيْكَ أُمُّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَعْنِي عَائِشَةَ فَقَالَ حَدَّثَتْنِي أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ لَهَا " لَوْلاَ أَنَّ قَوْمَكِ حَدِيثُو عَهْدٍ بِالْجَاهِلِيَّةِ لَهَدَمْتُ الْكَعْبَةَ وَجَعَلْتُ لَهَا بَابَيْنِ " . قَالَ فَلَمَّا مَلَكَ ابْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ هَدَمَهَا وَجَعَلَ لَهَا بَابَيْنِ . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ .

Mahmud ibn Ghaylan narrated to us: Abu Dawud narrated to us, from Shu'bah, from Abu Ishaq, from al-Aswad ibn Yazid, that Ibn al-Zubayr said to him: ‘Tell me what the Mother of the Believers—meaning A'ishah—used to confide to you.’ He replied: ‘She told me that the Messenger of Allah said to her, “Were it not that your people are still close to the pre-Islamic era, I would demolish the Ka'bah and give it two doors.”’ When Ibn al-Zubayr came to power, he demolished it and gave it two doors.
Abu Isa said: This is a hasan sahih hadith.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The report says Ibn al-Zubayr later rebuilt the Ka'bah with two doors, following the plan A'ishah had related.
