Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Muhammad ibn Bashshar narrated to us: Yahya ibn Sa'id narrated to us, from Isma'il ibn Abi Khalid, from Abu Ishaq, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn Umar, from the Prophet, with a report of similar meaning. Muhammad ibn Bashshar said that Yahya considered the version of Sufyan to be correct. There are reports on this topic from Ali, Abu Ayyub, Abd Allah ibn Mas'ud, Jabir, and Usamah ibn Zayd. Abu Isa said: Ibn Umar's report through Sufyan is sounder than the version through Isma'il ibn Abi Khalid. Sufyan's hadith is hasan sahih.

Scholars act on this report: the Maghrib prayer is not performed before reaching Muzdalifah. When they arrive at Muzdalifah, they combine the two prayers with one iqamah and do not perform voluntary prayers between them. This was preferred by some scholars, including Sufyan al-Thawri. Sufyan said that one may instead pray Maghrib, eat dinner and put away one's riding gear, then make the call and perform Isha. Other scholars said to combine Maghrib and Isha at Muzdalifah with one call to prayer and two iqamahs: call the prayer, establish and pray Maghrib, then establish and pray Isha.

Abu Isa said: Isra'il narrated this hadith from Abu Ishaq, from Abd Allah and Khalid, the two sons of Malik, from Ibn Umar. The report of Sa'id ibn Jubayr from Ibn Umar is also hasan sahih; Salamah ibn Kuhayl narrated it from Sa'id ibn Jubayr. Abu Ishaq, however, narrated it from Abd Allah and Khalid, the two sons of Malik, from Ibn Umar.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The lengthy commentary records differing procedures for combining Maghrib and Isha at Muzdalifah, while noting the preference for Sufyan's chain.
