Qutaybah narrated to us: al-Layth narrated to us, from Nafi', from Ibn Umar, who said: The Messenger of Allah shaved his head. A group of his Companions also shaved, while others shortened their hair. Ibn Umar said that the Messenger of Allah said, ‘May Allah have mercy on those who shaved their heads’ once or twice, then said, ‘and on those who shortened their hair.’

There are reports on this topic from Ibn Abbas, Ibn Umm al-Husayn, Marib, Abu Sa'id, Abu Maryam, Hubshi ibn Junadah, and Abu Hurayrah. Abu Isa said: This is a hasan sahih hadith. Scholars act on this and prefer that a man shave his head, though they consider shortening sufficient. This is the view of Sufyan al-Thawri, al-Shafi'i, Ahmad, and Ishaq.
