Ibn Umar narrated that the Messenger of Allah said: Whoever keeps a dog that is not used for hunting or guarding livestock will have two qirats deducted from his reward each day. Reports on this topic are also narrated from Abdullah ibn Mughaffal, Abu Hurayrah, and Sufyan ibn Abi Zuhayr. Abu Isa said: The hadith of Ibn Umar is hasan sahih. It is also reported from the Prophet that he said: or a dog for guarding crops.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The Arabic first mentions a hunting dog and a livestock dog; an additional report mentions a dog for crops. Qirat is retained as a unit of reward.

The Arabic differentiates a hunting dog and a livestock dog; another version adds a dog used for crops.

Should the categories be rendered as hunting, livestock, and crop-guarding dogs throughout?
