Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.
Abd ibn Humayd narrated to us: Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us: Ma'mar informed us, from al-Zuhri, who said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Abu Bakr, and Umar used to walk ahead of the funeral procession." Al-Zuhri said: "Salim informed me that his father used to walk ahead of the funeral procession." There are also reports on this topic from Anas. Abu Isa said: The hadith of Ibn Umar was transmitted in this way by Ibn Jurayj, Ziyad ibn Sa'd, and more than one other narrator, from al-Zuhri, from Salim, from his father, in a form like the hadith of Ibn 'Uyaynah. Ma'mar, Yunus ibn Yazid, Malik, and more than one of the precise hadith narrators transmitted from al-Zuhri that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to walk ahead of the funeral procession. Al-Zuhri said: "Salim informed me that his father used to walk ahead of the funeral procession." All the hadith scholars regard the mursal report on this matter as more sound. Abu Isa said: I heard Yahya ibn Musa say: Abd al-Razzaq said that Ibn al-Mubarak said: "Al-Zuhri's mursal hadith on this matter is more sound than the hadith of Ibn 'Uyaynah." Ibn al-Mubarak said: "I think Ibn Jurayj took it from Ibn 'Uyaynah." Abu Isa said: Hammam ibn Yahya transmitted this hadith from Ziyad (that is, Ibn Sa'd), Mansur, Bakr, and Sufyan, from al-Zuhri, from Salim, from his father. Sufyan here is Sufyan ibn 'Uyaynah, from whom Hammam transmitted. Scholars differed about walking ahead of the funeral procession. Some scholars among the Prophet's Companions and others considered walking ahead of it preferable. This is the view of al-Shafi'i and Ahmad. He said: The hadith of Anas on this topic is not preserved.

وَأَهْلُ الْحَدِيثِ كُلُّهُمْ يَرَوْنَ أَنَّ الْحَدِيثَ الْمُرْسَلَ فِي ذَلِكَ أَصَحُّ .
The passage contrasts a mursal report with the connected report through Ibn 'Uyaynah; mursal is a technical hadith term.
Should 'mursal' remain transliterated here, and does 'more sound' preserve the comparative grading in the source?
