Qutaybah narrated to us: Abu Safwan narrated to us, from Usamah ibn Zayd, from Ibn Shihab, from Anas ibn Malik, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Hamzah on the day of Uhud. He stood over him and saw that he had been mutilated. He said: "Were it not that Safiyyah would be distressed, I would have left him until the scavenging creatures ate him, so that he would be raised on the Day of Resurrection from their bellies." Then he called for a worn mantle and shrouded him in it. When it was spread over his head, his feet showed; when it was spread over his feet, his head showed. There were many dead and few garments, so one, two, and three men were shrouded in a single garment and then buried in one grave. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked about them, "Which of them knew more of the Qur'an?" and placed that person toward the qiblah. The Messenger of Allah buried them and did not perform the funeral prayer over them. Abu Isa said: The hadith of Anas is hasan gharīb; we know it as a hadith of Anas only through this route. A namirah is a worn mantle. Usamah ibn Zayd was contradicted in transmitting this hadith: al-Layth ibn Sa'd transmitted it from Ibn Shihab, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Ka'b ibn Malik, from Jabir ibn Abdullah; Ma'mar transmitted it from al-Zuhri, from Abdullah ibn Tha'labah, from Jabir. We know of no one who attributed it from al-Zuhri to Anas except Usamah ibn Zayd. I asked Muhammad about this hadith, and he said: The hadith of al-Layth, from Ibn Shihab, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Ka'b ibn Malik, from Jabir, is more sound.

The Arabic uses al-'afiyah for creatures that consume carrion and gives the reason in relation to Safiyyah's feelings; the exact implied scene is not further explained.
Does 'scavenging creatures' render al-'afiyah neutrally without adding a specific animal?
النَّمِرَةُ الْكِسَاءُ الْخَلَقُ .
The source itself glosses the rare garment term as a worn kisā'.
Is 'worn mantle' sufficiently broad for kisā' al-khaliq?
