Abu Kurayb narrated to us: Mu'awiyah ibn Hisham narrated to us, from Imran ibn Anas al-Makki, from 'Ata', from Ibn Umar, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Mention the good qualities of your dead, and refrain from mentioning their faults." Abu Isa said: This is a gharīb hadith. I heard Muhammad say: "Imran ibn Anas al-Makki is munkar al-hadith. Some narrators transmitted it from 'Ata', from Aishah." He said: Imran ibn Abi Anas, an Egyptian, is earlier and more reliable than Imran ibn Anas al-Makki.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The narrator criticism is a technical grading phrase and does not map neatly to a single English descriptor.
Should munkar al-hadith be retained in transliteration or rendered with an explanatory English equivalent?
