Muhammad ibn Bashshar narrated to us: Safwan ibn Isa narrated to us, from Bishr ibn Rafi', from Abdullah ibn Sulayman ibn Junadah ibn Abi Umayyah, from his father, from his grandfather, from Ubadah ibn al-Samit, who said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) accompanied a funeral procession, he would not sit until the deceased had been placed in the burial niche. A rabbi encountered him and said, 'This is what we do, Muhammad.' The Messenger of Allah sat and said, 'Do differently from them.' Abu Isa said: This is a gharīb hadith. Bishr ibn Rafi' is not strong in hadith.

  • ‏ قَالَ فَجَلَسَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَقَالَ ‏"‏ خَالِفُوهُمْ ‏" ‏ ‏.

The Arabic imperative is brief, and the exact practice to be differed from is supplied by the preceding exchange.

Does 'Do differently from them' retain the scope of the instruction without overexplaining it?
