Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Ja'far narrated to us: Shu'bah informed us, from Amr ibn Murrah, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla, who said: Zayd ibn Arqam used to pronounce four takbirs over our funerals, but once he pronounced five over a funeral. We asked him about that, and he said, 'The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pronounce them.' Abu Isa said: The hadith of Zayd ibn Arqam is hasan sahih. Some scholars among the Prophet's Companions and others adopted this view and held that five takbirs are pronounced over the funeral. Ahmad and Ishaq said: If the imam pronounces five takbirs over the funeral, he is to be followed.
