Muhammad ibn Bashshar narrated to us: Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us: Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to us, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Jubayr ibn Nufayr, from his father, from Awf ibn Malik, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) praying over a deceased person, and I understood this supplication from his prayer: 'O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, wash him with hail, and wash him as a garment is washed.' Abu Isa said: This is a hasan sahih hadith. Muhammad ibn Isma'il said: The soundest report on this topic is this hadith.

Al-barad means hail or cold precipitation; the Arabic also repeats the washing verb in the simile.
Does 'hail' preserve the source's image, or is another literal rendering preferable?
