Muhammad ibn Bashshar narrated to us: Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us: Sufyan narrated to us, from Sa'd ibn Ibrahim, from Talhah ibn Awf, that Ibn Abbas performed the funeral prayer over a deceased person and recited the Opening of the Book. I asked him about it, and he said, 'It is from the Sunnah, or part of the complete Sunnah.' Abu Isa said: This is a hasan sahih hadith. Some scholars among the Prophet's Companions and others act on this and prefer reciting the Opening of the Book after the first takbir. This is the view of al-Shafi'i, Ahmad, and Ishaq. Some scholars said that nothing is recited during the funeral prayer; rather, it consists of praising Allah, invoking blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and supplicating for the deceased. This is the view of al-Thawri and other scholars of Kufa. Talhah ibn Abdullah ibn Awf was the nephew of Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf, and al-Zuhri narrated from him.

The narrator reports two possible phrasings, one of which intensifies the description as part of the Sunnah's completeness.
Does 'part of the complete Sunnah' adequately convey tamām al-sunnah?
