حَدَّثَنَا هَنَّادٌ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ بْنِ جَابِرٍ، عَنْ بُسْرِ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنْ أَبِي إِدْرِيسَ الْخَوْلاَنِيِّ، عَنْ وَاثِلَةَ بْنِ الأَسْقَعِ، عَنْ أَبِي مَرْثَدٍ الْغَنَوِيِّ، قَالَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم " لاَ تَجْلِسُوا عَلَى الْقُبُورِ وَلاَ تُصَلُّوا إِلَيْهَا " . قَالَ وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ وَعَمْرِو بْنِ حَزْمٍ وَبَشِيرِ ابْنِ الْخَصَاصِيَةِ . حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْمُبَارَكِ، بِهَذَا الإِسْنَادِ نَحْوَهُ .

Hannad narrated to us: Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak narrated to us, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Yazid ibn Jabir, from Busr ibn Ubayd Allah, from Abu Idris al-Khawlani, from Wathilah ibn al-Asqa', from Abu Marthad al-Ghanawi, who said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Do not sit on graves, and do not pray toward them.' Reports on this topic are also related from Abu Hurairah, Amr ibn Hazm, and Bashir ibn al-Khasasiyyah.
Muhammad ibn Bashshar narrated to us: Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us, from Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak, with this chain, a similar report.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
قَالَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم " لاَ تَجْلِسُوا عَلَى الْقُبُورِ وَلاَ تُصَلُّوا إِلَيْهَا " .
The Arabic states a prohibition but does not specify whether 'toward them' means facing a grave directly or more generally.
Does 'pray toward them' preserve the source's general wording without narrowing its scope?
