Abu Kurayb narrated to us: Muhammad ibn al-Salt narrated to us, from Abu Kudaynah, from Qabus ibn Abi Zabyan, from his father, from Ibn Abbas, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by the graves of Madinah, turned his face toward them, and said: 'Peace be upon you, people of the graves. May Allah forgive us and you. You have gone ahead of us, and we are following in your wake.' Reports on this topic are also related from Buraydah and Aishah. Abu Isa said: The hadith of Ibn Abbas is hasan gharīb. Abu Kudaynah's name was Yahya ibn al-Muhallab, and Abu Zabyan's name was Husayn ibn Jundub.

The final phrase literally refers to following in someone's trace or wake, while the preceding clause identifies the deceased as having gone before the living.
Does 'following in your wake' retain the source's image naturally and accurately?
