حَدَّثَنَا نَصْرُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْجَهْضَمِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، حَدَّثَنَا الْعَوَّامُ بْنُ حَوْشَبٍ، عَنْ أَبِي مُحَمَّدٍ، مَوْلَى عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ عَنْ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم " مَنْ قَدَّمَ ثَلاَثَةً لَمْ يَبْلُغُوا الْحُلُمَ كَانُوا لَهُ حِصْنًا حَصِينًا مِنَ النَّارِ " . قَالَ أَبُو ذَرٍّ قَدَّمْتُ اثْنَيْنِ . قَالَ " وَاثْنَيْنِ " . فَقَالَ أُبَىُّ بْنُ كَعْبٍ سَيِّدُ الْقُرَّاءِ قَدَّمْتُ وَاحِدًا قَالَ " وَوَاحِدًا وَلَكِنْ إِنَّمَا ذَاكَ عِنْدَ الصَّدْمَةِ الأُولَى " . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ غَرِيبٌ . وَأَبُو عُبَيْدَةَ لَمْ يَسْمَعْ مِنْ أَبِيهِ .

Nasr ibn Ali al-Jahdami narrated to us: Ishaq ibn Yusuf narrated to us: al-Awwam ibn Hawshab narrated to us, from Abu Muhammad, the freedman of Umar ibn al-Khattab, from Abu Ubaydah ibn Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, from Abdullah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Whoever has three children die before reaching puberty, they will be a strong shield for him from the Fire.' Abu Dharr said, 'Two died before me.' He said, 'And two.' Ubayy ibn Ka'b, the leading reciter, said, 'One died before me.' He said, 'And one—but this applies only at the first shock.' Abu Isa said: This is a gharīb hadith. Abu Ubaydah did not hear from his father.

فَقَالَ أُبَىُّ بْنُ كَعْبٍ سَيِّدُ الْقُرَّاءِ قَدَّمْتُ وَاحِدًا قَالَ " وَوَاحِدًا وَلَكِنْ إِنَّمَا ذَاكَ عِنْدَ الصَّدْمَةِ الأُولَى " .
The Arabic refers to al-sadmah al-ula, the initial shock, without specifying whether this means the first moment of bereavement or the initial grief more broadly.
Does 'at the first shock' preserve the expression without narrowing its time span?
