Nasr ibn Ali al-Jahdami and Abu al-Khattab, Ziyad ibn Yahya al-Basri, narrated to us: They said: Abd Rabbih ibn Bariq al-Hanafi narrated to us: I heard my maternal grandfather, Simak ibn al-Walid al-Hanafi, known as Abu Ummi, relate that he heard Ibn Abbas say that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Whoever has two forerunners from my community, Allah will admit him to Paradise through them.' Aishah asked him, 'What about someone from your community who has one forerunner?' He said, 'Whoever has one forerunner too, O favored one.' She asked, 'What about someone from your community who has no forerunner?' He said, 'I am the forerunner of my community; they will not suffer the loss of anyone like me.' Abu Isa said: This is a hasan gharīb hadith. We know it only through the hadith of Abd Rabbih ibn Bariq, though more than one leading scholar transmitted from him.

Ahmad ibn Sa'id al-Murabiti narrated to us: Habban ibn Hilal narrated to us: Abd Rabbih ibn Bariq informed us with a similar report. Simak ibn al-Walid is Abu Zumayl al-Hanafi.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed

Faratan refers to children who precede their parents in death; that contextual meaning is not stated explicitly in the report's wording.

Should 'forerunners' remain literal, or should the English identify them as children who died before the parent?

The second clause uses an idiom about not being struck by the loss of someone comparable to the Prophet, and leaves the implication unstated.

Does the English preserve the idiom without stating an inferred consolation?
