Qutaybah narrated to us: Hammad ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Amr ibn Dinar, from Amir ibn Sa'd, from Usamah ibn Zayd, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned the plague and said: 'It is a remnant of the scourge—or punishment—sent upon a group of the Children of Israel. If it occurs in a land while you are there, do not leave it; and if it occurs in a land while you are not there, do not go to it.' Reports on this topic are also related from Sa'd, Khuzaymah ibn Thabit, Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf, Jabir, and Aishah. Abu Isa said: The hadith of Usamah ibn Zayd is hasan sahih.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed

The narrator preserves two alternatives, rijz and punishment, without defining their distinction.

Does 'scourge—or punishment' preserve the source's alternative without selecting one sense?
