Abu al-Fadl Maktum ibn al-Abbas al-Tirmidhi narrated to us: Abdullah ibn Salih narrated to us: al-Layth said: Uqayl narrated to me, from Ibn Shihab, who said: Abu Salamah ibn Abd al-Rahman informed me, from Abu Hurairah, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would be brought a deceased man who had a debt. He would ask, 'Has he left anything to settle his debt?' If he was told that the man had left enough to repay it, he would perform the funeral prayer over him. Otherwise, he would say to the Muslims, 'Pray over your companion.' When Allah granted him the conquests, he stood and said: 'I am closer to the believers than they are to themselves. Whoever among the Muslims dies leaving a debt, its repayment is my responsibility; whoever leaves property, it belongs to his heirs.' Abu Isa said: This is a hasan sahih hadith. Yahya ibn Bukayr and more than one other narrator also transmitted it from al-Layth ibn Sa'd in a form like the report of Abdullah ibn Salih.

The Arabic contrasts the Prophet's responsibility for unpaid debts with the inheritance of property, without explaining the institutional scope of that responsibility.
Does 'its repayment is my responsibility' preserve the statement without adding limits or modern legal interpretation?
