Yusuf ibn Isa narrated to us: Ali ibn Asim narrated to us. He said: By Allah, Muhammad ibn Suqah narrated to us, from Ibrahim, from al-Aswad, from Abdullah, from the Prophet, who said: Whoever consoles someone struck by a calamity will have a reward like his. Abu Isa said: This hadith is gharīb; we know it as a marfūʿ report only through the narration of Ali ibn Asim. Some narrated something like it from Muhammad ibn Suqah through this chain as mawqūf, without raising it to the Prophet. It is said that this hadith was among the things over which Ali ibn Asim was tested, and for which he was criticized.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The chain-status terms are retained: marfūʿ means attributed to the Prophet; mawqūf means that the report stops short of the Prophet.
وَيُقَالُ أَكْثَرُ مَا ابْتُلِيَ بِهِ عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَاصِمٍ بِهَذَا الْحَدِيثِ نَقَمُوا عَلَيْهِ .
The compiler's phrase about what Ali ibn Asim was 'tested' by is unusual and may refer to a report for which he was criticized.
Does the Arabic phrase indicate a test, or a particular report that became a source of criticism?
