ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Muḥayrīz asked Faḍālah ibn ʿUbayd whether hanging a thief’s severed hand around his neck was part of the Sunnah. Faḍālah replied that a thief was brought to the Messenger of Allah, whose order led to the hand being amputated and then hung around his neck. This report is ḥasan gharīb and is known only through ʿUmar ibn ʿAlī al-Muqaddamī from al-Ḥajjāj ibn Arṭāh. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Muḥayrīz was Syrian and the brother of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥayrīz.
