The Prophet said: ‘Hands are not amputated during a military campaign.’ This report is gharīb. Some scholars, including al-Awzāʿī, held that the prescribed punishment should not be carried out in a campaign while facing the enemy, for fear that the person punished might defect to the enemy. Once the commander has left enemy territory and returned to Muslim lands, he should carry out the punishment.
