The Messenger of Allah said: ‘If you find someone who has taken spoils dishonestly in Allah’s cause, burn his belongings.’ Ṣāliḥ said that he once entered upon Maslamah while Sālim ibn ʿAbd Allāh was with him. They found a man guilty of such embezzlement, and Maslamah ordered his belongings burned. When a muṣḥaf was found among them, Sālim said, ‘Sell this and give its price in charity.’ This report is gharīb and known only through this route. Some scholars, including al-Awzāʿī, Aḥmad, and Isḥāq, acted upon it. Muḥammad said that Ṣāliḥ ibn Muḥammad ibn Zāʾidah, also known as Abū Wāqid al-Laythī, was a munkar narrator. Other reports from the Prophet about embezzlement do not mention burning the offender’s belongings.
