Hadith Text

"When performing Wudu go between the fingers of your hands and (toes of) your feet."

Commentary

This noble hadith establishes the obligation of khilal (passing between) the fingers and toes during ablution. The scholars have differed regarding its ruling: the majority hold it to be sunnah mu'akkadah (emphasized tradition), while some consider it wajib (obligatory).

The wisdom behind this command is to ensure water reaches all parts that must be washed, as the spaces between fingers and toes are often neglected. The Prophet ﷺ emphasized thoroughness in purification, as it is the key to prayer being accepted.

The method is to pass the little finger of the left hand between the toes of the right foot, and vice versa, ensuring water penetrates all interstices. This practice demonstrates the completeness and perfection of Islamic teachings, leaving no aspect of purification unattended.

Legal Rulings

• Majority view: Emphasized sunnah (sunnah mu'akkadah)

• Minority view: Obligatory (wajib)

• Neglecting it deliberately: Makruh (disliked)

• Forgetting it: Does not invalidate wudu but should be completed if remembered
