Meaning & Significance

This noble tradition demonstrates the Sunnah of reciting the Adhan in the right ear of a newborn Muslim child. The Adhan contains the fundamental declarations of Islamic faith - the greatness of Allah, His Oneness, and the messengership of Muhammad (ﷺ).

Scholars explain that this practice introduces the child to the Islamic testimony from the first moments of life, making the Kalimah (declaration of faith) the first words heard. It serves as spiritual protection and blessing, invoking Allah's remembrance at this blessed occasion.

Juridical Ruling

The majority of scholars consider this practice recommended (mustahabb) rather than obligatory. It is preferably performed immediately after birth, with the Adhan in the right ear and Iqamah in the left ear, following the Prophet's example with his grandson Al-Hasan.

Spiritual Wisdom

This Sunnah connects the newborn's entry into worldly life with the remembrance of Allah, paralleling how the Adhan calls believers to prayer throughout their lives. It symbolizes the child's induction into the Muslim community and establishes spiritual foundations from infancy.

The specific choice of Al-Hasan, the Prophet's grandson, demonstrates the universal application of this practice for all Muslim children, not just those of particular lineage.
