Hannad narrated to us: Abdah ibn Sulayman narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, from al-Zuhri, from Ubayd Allah ibn Abd Allah ibn Utbah, from Ibn Abbas, from his mother Umm al-Fadl, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us during his illness with his head bandaged. He led the sunset prayer and recited Surat al-Mursalat. She said: He did not lead that prayer again before he met Allah. There are reports on this topic from Jubayr ibn Mutim, Ibn Umar, Abu Ayyub, and Zayd ibn Thabit. Abu Isa said: The hadith of Umm al-Fadl is hasan sahih. It is also reported that the Prophet recited Surat al-Araf in both units of the sunset prayer, and that he recited Surat al-Tur. Umar is reported to have written to Abu Musa telling him to recite the shorter surahs of al-Mufassal in the sunset prayer. Abu Bakr al-Siddiq is reported to have recited the shorter surahs of al-Mufassal in that prayer. Abu Isa said: This is the practice of the scholars; Ibn al-Mubarak, Ahmad, and Ishaq held this view. Al-Shafii said that it was reported from Malik that he disliked reciting long surahs such as al-Tur and al-Mursalat in the sunset prayer. Al-Shafii said: I do not dislike that; rather, I prefer that these surahs be recited in the sunset prayer.
