Aḥmad ibn Manīʿ narrated to us: Abū Muʿāwiyah narrated to us, from al-Aʿmash, from Ibrāhīm, from ʿAlqamah, from ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, who said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would stay up talking with Abū Bakr about matters concerning the Muslims, and I would be with them. There are also reports on this topic from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr, Aws ibn Ḥudhayfah, and ʿImrān ibn Ḥuṣayn. Abū ʿĪsā said: The hadith of ʿUmar is hasan. Al-Ḥasan ibn ʿUbayd Allāh also narrated this hadith from Ibrāhīm, from ʿAlqamah, from a man of Juʿfī called Qays—or Ibn Qays—from ʿUmar, from the Prophet (ﷺ), in a lengthy account. Scholars among the Prophet’s Companions, the Successors, and those after them differed about staying up talking after the later ʿIshāʾ prayer. Some disliked it, while others allowed it when it concerned knowledge or necessary matters. Most reports indicate permission. It has also been reported from the Prophet (ﷺ): “There should be no late-night talk except for someone praying or a traveler.”

The compiler gives another route in which an intermediary is identified only as a man from Juʿfī, called Qays or Ibn Qays, and says it occurs in a longer account.
No decision requested; the uncertainty in the intermediary’s name is preserved.
