Translation

Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Qutaybah narrated to us: al-Layth narrated to us, from Khālid ibn Yazīd, from Saʿīd ibn Abī Hilāl, from Isḥāq ibn ʿUmar, from ʿĀʾishah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) did not pray a prayer at its later time on two occasions before Allah took him. Abū ʿĪsā said: This hadith is hasan gharīb, and its chain is not connected. Al-Shāfiʿī said: The early time of prayer is better. Evidence that the early time is better than the later time is the practice preferred by the Prophet (ﷺ), Abū Bakr, and ʿUmar: they would choose only what was better and would not leave aside the virtue, and they used to pray at the beginning of the time. Abū al-Walīd al-Makkī narrated this to us from al-Shāfiʿī.

  • قَالَتْ مَا صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم صَلاَةً لِوَقْتِهَا الآخِرِ مَرَّتَيْنِ حَتَّى قَبَضَهُ اللَّهُ ‏ .

The Arabic phrase states that he did not pray any prayer at its latter time ‘twice’ before his death; its precise intended force is unclear, so the wording is kept close to the source.

No decision requested; retain the literal ambiguity pending any authoritative preferred reading.
