Abu Said said: One of us may pray and not know how much he has prayed. The Messenger of Allah said: "When one of you prays and does not know how much he has prayed, let him perform two prostrations while seated." Reports on this topic are also narrated from Uthman, Ibn Masud, Aishah, and Abu Hurayrah. Abu Isa said: The hadith of Abu Said is hasan, and it has also been transmitted from Abu Said through another chain. It is also reported from the Prophet that he said: "If one of you is uncertain whether he has prayed one or two rakahs, let him count it as one. If he is uncertain whether he has prayed two or three, let him count it as two and perform two prostrations before saying the taslim." Our scholars acted on this. Some scholars said that if someone is uncertain in his prayer and does not know how much he has prayed, he should repeat it.
