Al-Bara ibn Azib reported that the Prophet used to recite the qunut supplication in the dawn and sunset prayers. Reports on this topic are also narrated from Ali, Anas, Abu Hurayrah, Ibn Abbas, and Khufaf ibn Ima ibn Rahdah al-Ghifari. Abu Isa said: The hadith of al-Bara is hasan sahih. Scholars differed about qunut in the dawn prayer. Some scholars among the Companions and others considered qunut in the dawn prayer appropriate; this was the view of Malik and al-Shafii. Ahmad and Ishaq said that qunut is not performed in the dawn prayer except when a calamity befalls the Muslims. When such a calamity occurs, the imam may supplicate for the Muslim armies.
