Hurayth ibn Qabisah said: I came to Madinah and said, "O Allah, provide me with a righteous companion." I sat with Abu Hurayrah and said: I asked Allah to provide me with a righteous companion, so tell me a hadith you heard from the Messenger of Allah, so that perhaps Allah will benefit me through it. Abu Hurayrah said: I heard the Messenger of Allah say: "The first deed for which a servant will be called to account on the Day of Resurrection is prayer. If it is sound, he has succeeded and prospered; if it is corrupt, he has failed and lost. If anything is lacking from his obligatory prayer, the Lord, Mighty and Majestic, will say: See whether My servant has any voluntary prayers, so that what is lacking from the obligatory prayer may be completed with them. Then the rest of his deeds will be treated in the same way." A report on this topic is also narrated from Tamim al-Dari. Abu Isa said: The hadith of Abu Hurayrah is hasan gharib through this chain. It has also been transmitted from Abu Hurayrah through other chains. Some narrators from among the companions of al-Hasan transmitted from al-Hasan, from Qabisah ibn Hurayth, a report other than this one; the well-known name is Qabisah ibn Hurayth. A similar report is also narrated from Anas ibn Hakim, from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet.
