Ali said: The Prophet used to pray four rakahs before the noon prayer and two rakahs after it. Reports on this topic are also narrated from Aishah and Umm Habibah. Abu Isa said: The hadith of Ali is hasan. Abu Bakr al-Attar said: Ali ibn Abdullah narrated from Yahya ibn Said, from Sufyan, who said: We recognized the superiority of the hadith of Asim ibn Damrah over the hadith of al-Harith. Most scholars among the Companions and those after them acted on this and preferred praying four rakahs before the noon prayer. This was the view of Sufyan al-Thawri, Ibn al-Mubarak, Ishaq, and the scholars of Kufa. Some scholars said that the night and day prayers are performed two rakahs at a time, with a separation between every two rakahs. This was the view of al-Shafii and Ahmad.
