Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Abū Salamah Yaḥyā ibn Khalaf al-Baṣrī narrated to us: al-Muʿtamir ibn Sulaymān narrated to us, from his father, from Ḥanash, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, from the Prophet (ﷺ), who said: “Whoever combines two prayers without an excuse has entered through one of the gates of the major sins.” Abū ʿĪsā said: Ḥanash here is Abū ʿAlī al-Raḥabī, namely Ḥusayn ibn Qays. He is weak according to hadith scholars; Aḥmad and others regarded him as weak. The practice among scholars is not to combine two prayers except while traveling or at ʿArafah. Some scholars among the Successors allowed combining prayers for a sick person; Aḥmad and Isḥāq held this view. Some scholars allowed combining them because of rain; al-Shāfiʿī, Aḥmad, and Isḥāq held this view. Al-Shāfiʿī did not consider it permissible for a sick person to combine prayers.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed

The compiler identifies the transmitter Ḥanash as weak according to hadith scholars, including Aḥmad, and then describes differing juristic practice and exceptions.

No decision requested; the source’s warning and its chain assessment are both preserved.

The compiler records a general practice and several attributed exceptions, with a disagreement between al-Shāfiʿī and Aḥmad/Isḥāq about illness.

No decision requested; all qualifications and attributions are retained.
